Taschen have published 'Graphic Design for the 21st Century', written and
compiled by Charlotte and Peter Fiell. Covering 100 graphic designers from
around the world, this book also features Jamie Reid's 'God Save The Queen'
front cover in the introduction.
'History of Art Volume 12' ('Dejiny Umeni/ 12') which is subtitled
'Contempoary Art', has just been published by Euromedia Group, in Prague.
Covering everything from architecture, Duchamp, Cage, and Christo, to Beuys,
Paik, Reid, and Warhol. This book is a Czech language publication.
ISBN 80-242-0720-6 (hardback)
ISBN 80-7176-764-6 (softback)
As you may have noticed, Mr.Reid has been keeping a self-imposed
'low-profile' in terms of media exposure. Only two interviews on the
subjects of punk and his artwork, have been granted recently; these can be
found in the following publications:
-
Q Magazine's 'punk special' ("Nevermind The Jubilee"), carries a feature/
interview with Jamie, with comments on seven of his works from that period.
Out now for £4.99, (which beggars the question "what else can you get for a
fiver?"), as far as the "P" word is concerned, it's a good general
introduction to the subject at an affordable price.
-
Art Historian and writer Jon Wright has also interviewed Jamie on the
subject of the 'God Save The Queen' artwork; this will appear in the June
issue of Record Collector as part of a feature on the single.
Jon Savage's exquisitely written, and definitive book on all things Punk
Rock, and Sex Pistols, "England's Dreaming", has recently been re-published
by Faber and Faber. This publication, (there are many inferior titles in
print), traces the loose strands, which were later to become the rich
tapestry known as 'Punk', across the wilderness years of the early 70's,
through the high/low points, and concluding with the musical legacy. It is
also a powerful, and eminently readable social history of Britain. I cannot
recommend this book highly-enough. (BJ)
Two books recently published that feature some of Reid's timeless graphics
are, the epicly titled, 'A Century Of Graphic Design: Pioneers Of 20th
Century Graphic Design', a title that grasps the cultural importance of the
Artist and his works, which always were far more than just 'packaging' for
'product'. This is published by Mitchell-Beazely, and features a couple of
pages on the artist and his works.
'Punk', the book is published by Cassell + Co., and features front and back
covers of the Anarchy In The UK magazine.
